Creating a waistband from a provisional cast on

Now that we’ve got our provisional cast on with some knitting beneath it, we’re ready to create the waistband.

First, we need to pick up the stitches that are being held by the crochet chain we made at the start. Carefully, undo the last chain stitch made. You could pull the waste yarn end and free all the stitches at once, but I prefer to work with one stitch at a time to make sure I don’t lose any. Pick up the stitches knitwise on a second set of needles. This second needle can be the same size as your woking needle, or a bit smaller.

Now that you’ve got your stitches picked up and ready to work, fold your fabric in half with the wrong sides together and line up the two live edges of knitting. Using your primary working needle, knit together a stitch from the front needle and the back needle. Repeat until you’ve worked all the stitches on both needles.

For the Utopia Reversible Skirt, you’ll be working in the round and also placing an elastic waistband inside the tube you’re creating as you knit.
